项目摘要

本研究は、18、19世紀に書かれたイギリスの小説の中での男性の落涙に纏わる表象を通時的に分析することを通して、小説の黎明期の作品における男性の涙と18世紀の後半の作品で大量に流されることになった男性の涙の質的違いが何に起因するのか、そして19世紀に男性の涙が異常を示すものとして周縁化されていったのは何故かということを明らかにすることを目的とする。令和４年度は、Charles DickensのDombey and Son (1848)、Anthony TrollopeのThe Duke’s Children (1880)と、Oscar WildeのThe Picture of Dorian Gray (1890) を読み、令和2年度、3年度に読んだDaniel DefoeのThe Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (1719)、Jonathan SwiftのTravels into Several Remote Nations of the World, in Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of Several Ships (1726)、Henry FieldingのThe History of Tom Jones, a Foundling (1749)やHenry MackenzieのThe Man of Feeling (1771)と比較し、登場人物たちが涙を流す文脈や、涙を見せることによる効果について分析した。これらの分析を通して、18世紀から19世紀にかけて、自然な感情の高ぶりによる落涙から、男性の過度な多感さ、鬱病といった神経学や精神病理学などが示す神経的な病へと、涙の質が変化してきていることが明らかになった。
