今年度は、初代皇帝アウグストゥス即位後の貨幣の図像の特徴について、東地中海の各都市の調査を中心に行った。東地中海の諸都市の貨幣では、もともと各都市にゆかりのある神々や事物が描かれていたが、ヘレニズム時代になると、諸王家を顕彰する意図をもって描かれた図像を伴う貨幣が増えてくる。アウグストゥス帝期になると、皇帝に関わる図像が急増する。こうした状況は以後の皇帝の時代になっても続いていくことが確認された。ただしそれと同時にうかがえるようになってくる傾向は、皇帝の図像と都市のアイデンティに関わる図像の融合である。例えば都市の守護神と皇帝が並んで描かれるような事例が散見されるようになる。その一方で、都市のアイデンティティに関わる図像のみならず、都市の支配者個人に関わる図像も描かれるようにもなっている。この理由として考えられるのは、諸王朝が並立していたヘレニズム時代とは異なり、一元的なローマによる支配が成立していったことだと思われる。ローマの一元的な支配が浸透することによって、ローマとのつながりがより密接になっていったため、都市は帝国との融合をより強く求める願望が反映して、個々の都市とローマが融合した図像が描かれるようになっていったのであろう。その一方で、ローマ以外の勢力への配慮を必要としなくなったため、自分の願望を直接的に訴える余裕が返って出てきたので、各都市の支配者が自身の顕示を狙った図像も描かれるようになっていったのであろう。
