本研究では、草原地帯で出土する広範な有機質遺物、とりわけ彩色の施された遺物に対するトレハロース法の有効性を検証し、適正な保存処理方法の確立を目指している。さらに、現地保存科学者との研究協力・技術移転を図ることで、同地域における文化財保存の礎を築き、保存処理が永続的に行なわれるようになることを目的としている。新型コロナウイルスの影響により、2020および2021年度に予定していたモンゴルでの資料調査を行なうことができなかったが、2022年度に実資料の状態把握のための現地調査を行なうことができた。また、モンゴルの研究者を招聘し、実資料への保存処理方法について、実験結果等を踏まえ、協議、検討した。並行して彩色木材サンプルを用いた実験を進めた。具体的には、出土資料で確認されている顔料を用意し、それらの成分分析、塗布した木材サンプルを作成、各保存処理方法で使用される薬剤による彩色部分への影響の有無を確認するための実験を進めた。
