Anxious but productive lifestyle mobilities? Divided selves in post-growth Japan

In August-September 2022 fieldwork could finally be conducted in Finland, Estonia, Denmark and Austria. 23 interviews were conducted in Vienna, Helsinki, Tallinn and Viljandi and in Copenhagen. Furthermore, in March 2023 follow-up interviews with returnees and participant observation were carried out in Nagoya and Tokyo. Meeting collaborators added valuable insights to online interviews carried out during the pandemic. Methodologically, twitter turned out as a useful tool to recruit interviewees and gain insights into their lives before meeting them face to face.Most interviewees were satisfied with their lives, yet uncertainty was a frequent feature in narratives. Attempts to pursue new modes of work, seek novel gender roles (non-binary), combine work and family were also themes.
