第三年目も、英国の政治システム理解の前提となる英国政治学の古典的著作の日本での受容を分析して、主題検討に繋げようと試みた。前年度までに、近年刊行された各種の翻訳書や研究書に刺激されて、「知性」「徳性」「自由」「効用」の理解との関連に注目しつつ代議制デモクラシーの哲学的基礎を再検討してきた。本年度は、それらの知的枠組みにも多大な影響をもたらしている19世紀半ば以降の「宗教」や「進化論」の関係も踏まえて、英国と日本の代議制デモクラシーの思想的背景を探った。①J.S.ミルとH.スペンサーの政治思想の日本への受容を確認する一環で、『宗教三論』や『宗教進化論』の近代日本での各種翻訳と英語原文との比較対照を行った。特に明治期の小幡篤次郎と高橋達郎の翻訳、有賀長雄の紹介の検討をとおして、英国の著者とは異なる、「儒教」「武士道」や「道理」を介した日本の翻訳者たちの解釈を確認した。また併せて昭和初期の津久井龍雄の紹介を検討した。②英国における社会進化論の展開とその明治・大正期日本での受容や理解の変遷の検討を行った。すでに厚い研究蓄積がある主題であるが、法律進化論・宗教進化論やH.スペンサー・B.キッドをめぐる近年の国内外の研究動向を踏まえて、分析視角の再検討に注力した。日本では法哲学の分野で再評価がなされているスペンサーだが、なおも近代日本の思想受容の文脈で論じ直す余地があることを確認した。また人権の基礎づけ論・反基礎づけ論が思想史研究に及ぼす意義についても再考した。
