昨年に引き続き、買い物通り（メインストリート）の情報を新聞広告やセンサス、人名録から収集し、買い物通りの店舗に関するデータベースの作成を行った。昨年までは1850年代のものだけだったが、今年度は1840年代～60年代までに広げ、ベリ・セント・エドマンズ、ノッティンガム、イプスウィッチ、キングス・リンの買い物通りの分析を進めた。1830年代以降、1880年頃にデパートが出現するまでの間、買い物通りは年々変貌を遂げていく。1840年代～60年代だけを見ても変化が見られたが、新聞広告もそうした変化を示し、新たなサービスを提供する店舗が出現する。また、1850年代に新聞広告を掲載する店舗の多くはハイ・ストリートに立地していたが、1860年代以降になるとその他の通りの店舗の広告掲載の割合が高くなってくる。新聞広告を出す傾向にある店舗に大きな変化はなく、奢侈品を中心に取り扱うものが多いが、そうした店舗が都市の中でハイ・ストリート以外にも広がっていったからと思われる。ただ、ハイ・ストリートに立地する店舗の情報を集める手段としての新聞広告がもつ重要性が低くなることがわかった。19世紀後半のハイ・ストリートの再構築には新聞広告以外の資料を探す必要があることもわかってきた。新聞広告は時期によっても特徴が変化するが、同じ時期であっても、出版地の都市の性格によって特徴は異なる。たとえば、比較対象としている4つの都市の中で、製造業都市であるノッティンガムは製造業者用の機械等の詳細な広告がいくつも出現する一方で、ベリなどで見られるハイ・ストリートの奢侈品店の広告が少なくなっている特徴がある。ここまでの研究成果を論文としてまとめるつもりであったが、まだ書き終わっていない。
