本研究は、大学や学部等の規模や分野構成、学生教職員構成、研究力、人材養成機能特性（学位授与状況、就職状況等）、立地特性（立地、入学者広域性等）、財務構造（外部資金、人件費割合等）等が、若手研究者の雇用や分布等にいかに影響を与えているか、経済的支援や雇用財源等がポストドクターの年齢分布、進路、在籍期間等にいかに影響を与えるかなどの分析を行うことを目的としている。このため、令和４年度は、総務省及び文部科学省から提供を受けた「科学技術研究調査」、「学校基本調査」、「学校教員統計調査」及び「ポストドクター等の雇用・進路に関する調査」の調査票情報を、全国大学一覧（文部科学省）掲載の教学組織情報等と照らし合わせ、各国公私立大学の学部と研究科の関係性を整理しながら、各統計調査の連結を行い、学部等ごとに、男女別の学生数、入学者数（出身校所在地域別含む）、卒業者数及び就職者数、教職員給与、教育研究費等の経費、職位毎専門分野毎年齢別本務教員数、本務教員の授業担当時数及び新規採用教員数、専門分野毎年齢別・博士課程修了年別・主な雇用財源別ポストドクター等数、新規採用ポストドクター等数及び職種変更ポストドクター等数並びに職種別研究開発従業者数（任期無し研究者数含む）、専門分野別研究本務者数、新規採用研究本務者数、内部使用研究費、内訳別外部受入研究費、給与費、教育研究関係経費及び寄附金等収入等を集計し、分析を行っている。
