本研究は、19世紀のフランスの生命科学において環境の考察が生命観をどのように刷新したのかを哲学的、歴史的に分析してきたが、研究を進めていく中で、人間の環境には他の生物には見られない固有なものがないだろうか、そして人間の環境の固有性の分析は、「人間が生きる」とはどういうことかを考え直すように迫るのではないかではないか、という新しい問いに出会うことになった。そのような問いに取り組むきっかけになったのは、プラグマティズムの源流の一つに数えられるウィリアム・ジェイムズの思想である。環境をある存在者が生息する場所としてだけでなく、他の存在者との関係も意味するものと考えれば、ジェイムズにとって、「生きる」ということは刻々と変化する環境との関わり合いであり、この意味での環境をジェイムズは「実在」と考えていることがわかる。このようなジェイムズ理解にもとづいて令和3年度は研究を進め、11月に行われたベルクソンの国際学会で、Bergson le pragmatiste jamesienと題した発表を行った。今日ジェイムズの『プラグマティズム』はしばしば新たな真理の理論を提示した論考という評価を受けるのに対して、今から100年以上前に発表されたジェイムズ論の中で、この本の本質が実在観の刷新にあることを見抜いたベルクソンの正当性と独創性を明らかにし、ベルクソンがジェイムズ的なプラグマティストと呼べることを示した。また、受入研究者である合田正人氏と共同で行っているベルクソン書簡集第二巻の翻訳作業は、訳出が終わり、今年末までには法政大学出版局から出版する。最後に、出版の準備を進めているもう一つの翻訳書であるコントの『実証哲学講義』（全二巻）であるが、第一巻はすべての翻訳者の訳出作業が終わり、監修者である私が訳のチェックを行いつつ、訳注、解説等の準備を進めている。
