项目摘要

前年度までに、日本古代における山寺の宗教的機能について、新たな知見を一定程度獲得していた。本年度の研究活動は、その山寺についての知見を広げ、かつ深めることに力を注いだ。日本列島には６世紀中葉に仏教が伝来して以来、多くの寺院が営まれた。そのなかには山地に立つものも含まれるが、それら山寺の宗教的性格は、僧侶が実践的修行を積むための場としてのみ捉えられがちである。しかし、そのような理解は実証的研究成果に立脚したものではなく、時代間や宗派間における異同などにも十分には意が払われていない。本年度は、山寺研究の課題を克服すべく、改めて個別研究を蓄積することに注力した。とくに焦点をあてたのは近江国竜王山（滋賀県栗東町）に現存する金勝寺である。具体的には、まず、金勝寺の成立が九世紀初頭であり、紛れもなく平安初期の山寺であることを論じた。現在、金勝寺の創建は奈良時代に遡るとの考えが一般的である。しかし、金勝寺の創建経緯を説く史料群を収集・整理すると、奈良時代創建説は室町時代に発生したもので、それ以前の古文献はいずれも平安初期創建説を採っていることが判明した。次いで同寺の詳細な造営過程や宗教的機能につき、『類聚三代格』寛平９年（８９７）太政官符に依拠しつつ論じた。それによって、①金勝寺が山寺でありながら、実践的修行の場としてだけでなく、それと対を為す学解的修学の場としても機能したこと、②南都僧によって創建された山寺でありながら、天台・真言両宗に通じるあり方を呈すこと、③僧侶が学業や修業に励む場としてだけでなく、俗人が国土の安穏を祈願する場としても機能したこと、の三点を明らかにした。最終的に、金勝寺の事例を他の事例とも比較することで、必ずしも金勝寺に特有の事象ではないことを論じた。また、そうしたあり方が普及した背景に、桓武朝における山林修行重視の政策方針が影響を与えたと考えられることを論じた。
