本研究は、バーミヤーン石窟壁画について（1）最も重要な東西の二大仏の仏龕に描かれていた壁画を中心に、遺跡破壊前に撮影された写真データによって仏龕壁画展開図を作成し、それに基づいて仏龕壁画の描き起こし図を作成すること、（2）それと連動させて石窟構造と壁画の美術史的研究、（3）年代・編年を含めた歴史的位置づけを行うことを目的としている。（1）については、京都大学人文科学研究所所蔵を中心とした国内のバーミヤーン写真資料を収集、整理し、1/10縮尺の東大仏壁画写真展開図を作成し、それを基に、研究代表者（宮治）の監修のもと、壁画模写の専門家である正垣雅子氏の制作により東大仏の天井壁画を完成させた。当図は今迄に作成された描き起こし図の中で最も精密なもので、今後のバーミヤーン研究の基礎資料として国際的に役立てることができる。また、この成果をもとに、東大仏壁画と同様に西大仏の仏龕壁画の写真展開図も専門の委託業者と宮治が連携しながら精緻なものにすることができた。これを基に研究代表者の監修のもと、正垣雅子氏の制作により西大仏の仏龕壁画を現在制作しており、半分ほどが仕上がった。（2）については、本年度も引き続きガンダーラの仏教信仰や中央アジア美術との比較検討を進めた。2022年1月29日にオンライン「バーミヤーン・フォーラム-二大仏の破壊前と現在：課題と展望-」を開催し、宮治が「バーミヤーンの調査・研究を振り返って-二大仏の破壊とその後：現在と課題-」と題して研究発表を行った。また、描き起こし図制作を担当した正垣雅子氏により、「東大仏仏龕壁画の描き起こし図の作成-中央アジア壁画の模写を踏まえて-」と題して研究発表が行われ、描き起こし図の詳細と意義が報告された。研究分担者である岩井俊平氏は「新たな調査成果から見たバーミヤーン遺跡の年代」を発表し、本研究の成果の一部として意義あるものとなった。
