米国の高エネルギー物理学の中心的な次期計画であった超伝導超大型衝突型加速器(SSC)と日本学術会議の勧告に基づいて原子核特別委員会（核特委）が中心となって推進していた大強度加速器（HRAG）の計画は、どちらも計画承認後に加速器グループが改変され、再設計が行われ、デザインが大きく変更された。これらを、技術的な側面だけでなく、専門家集団の社会的構造の観点から分析することが本研究の目的である。2019年度には記録の収集を行ない、またSSC建設予定地であったテキサス州Waxahacieを訪問し、現地の様子を視察、地元紙の記録を集めた。しかし2020-21年度に予定していた関係者へのインタビューや記録の閲覧が新型コロナ感染症の影響によって実施不能となったために、すでに入手していた資料の分析に基づいて部分的な成果として学会発表のみを行った。2022年度にはHRAGから通常型の加速器へと方針転換した核特委における検討状況を一次資料に基づいてくわしく調査した結果、通説とされているいくつかの点に誤りがあることを発見し、論文執筆中である。
