项目摘要

本研究の目的は、イングランドから新大陸に渡ってきた植民地の人たち、イングランド人を自認しているはずの人たちが、植民地においていかにアメリカ性を獲得し、アメリカ化していったのかを、信仰という一面から検討することである。そのため、17世紀の天体および新大陸という2つの「新世界」にかかわる当時のイングランドおよび植民地の人々の言説および表象を分析し比較対照させることにより、植民地独自の要素、すなわち「アメリカ化」された文化的産物が構築されていく歴史的過程を分析する。本研究3年目で本来最終年度であった2021年度は、2020年度に続き、COVID-19パンデミックが収まる気配がなく、かねてからの計画であったマサチューセッツのプリマスでの調査、およびプリマスに渡る前の生活の地ライデンでの調査は断念せざるを得なかった。本来1年目に行う予定であった月にかかわる科学と技術にかんするヨーロッパにおける現地調査も改めて不可能となった。そのため、本来の計画にあった宗教史、科学史関連の基礎文献に加え、2年目の感染症と舞踊という、思わぬ方向への発展である舞踊にかんしての硬軟とりまぜた文献の検討を進めることになった。また研究課題も延長をお願いすることになった。成果としては、魔術的世界観から科学的世界観への移行期に起きた魔女狩りの研究史、アメリカ文学における宗教と女性のかかわり、そしてアメリカにおける舞踊の意味を問う原稿を執筆、これから1年以内には刊行される予定である。
