千葉の県立高校8校、福岡の県立高校4校、大阪府立岸和田高校、静岡県立清水東高校の剥製標本、計731点を調査した結果、次の5点が明らかになった。１）哺乳類・鳥類剥製標本が大量に購入された時期は1900(明治33)年ごろから1941(昭和16)年までであった。２）1899年(明治32)から1941(昭和16)年までの中学校動物学教科書では分類単位は、丘(1899)の教科書で採用された哺乳類11目、鳥類8目に固定されていた。３）高等学校の剥製標本は、長鼻類や奇蹄類などの大きすぎる動物をのぞき、丘(1899)の分類よりさらに細分化されていた飯島(1890)の分類を網羅するように購入されていた。 ４）当時の授業において、剥製は教科書の記述内容を目視により確認する目的で使用された。５）1942(昭和17)年の中学校教授要目の改正において、それまで目レベルで行われていた分類学的な授業が、綱レベルに変更されたため、目ごとに剥製標本で形態を確認するような授業が行われなくなった。学校に残された標本のなかには、種の保存法やワシントン条約等で取引が規制され、入手困難な標本も多い。こうした貴重な実物標本は、生物多様性保全や生態系保全などを考える際の教材として活用が期待できる。静岡県立清水東高校については、植物標本についても調査を行い、地元である静岡県の戦前の植物相や植物研究史を検証する上で貴重な資料が保存されていることが確認できた。この他、同志社中学校高等学校の「醇化館」に旧蔵されていた、貝類コレクションの由来と意義についても確認することができた。
