本課題は、縄文時代中期の具体的な土器作りシステムの解明を目指す基礎的な研究である。仮説として１土器型式内に複数の土器製作拠点がある可能性を検討している。それを証明する第一歩として、一定領域の遺跡を抽出し、ある土器型式の胎土が遺跡内外を通して共通する傾向が捉えられるかどうかの検証を試みている。また、その一方で特定の器種ないし型式の土器が、広域に移動している場合、そのような土器には、各集落で一般的な胎土とは異なる特別な胎土が確認されることになろう。そこで、栃倉式土器の胎土における遺跡内外の共通性の有無を順に検討してきたが、令和４年度には次の大きく２点の研究成果があげられる。まず１点目は中野市千田遺跡出土土器の非破壊カウント結果と偏光顕微鏡観察結果の対比を行ったことである。その結果、栃倉式土器は古段階・新段階ともに岩石では流紋岩、鉱物では石英を含むものが多く、胎土が定型化しているが、栃倉式以前の胎土は土器ごとの差異が大きく、搬入品を含む可能性が高いことを指摘できた。また、非破壊カウントで偏光顕微鏡観察を補い、個別具体的な岩石に置き換える際には、ある程度の変換の必要性が認識された。成果の２点目は、千曲川沿いにさらに下った左岸の栄村ひんご遺跡と同じく左岸の新潟県津南町出土土器の調査を行ったことである。ひんご遺跡では、報告書掲載土器がすべて村宝になっていることから、栃倉式古段階を中心に非掲載資料を実見し、分析予定資料を抽出した。津南町出土土器については栃倉式古段階の土坑出土一括資料を仮抽出した。これらのうち、前者では土器を借用して分析に入り、現在非破壊カウントを進めている。その後、薄片化により、砂部分の定量分析を進めたい。
