项目摘要

蜜柑や柑橘栽培に関する従来の研究の大半は平均気温や積算温度、地質、傾斜、日照などの自然条件や輸送条件に着目して産地形成における有利な条件の検証に力が注がれた。それらは一定の有効性を持つが、江戸時代から日本に存在する温州蜜柑がなぜ明治期に入ってから爆発的に需要増大となったかを説明するには不十分であった。それに対し本研究では、江戸時代に日本人が好んだ蜜柑は有核のキシュウミカン(通称 : 小蜜柑)で、有核であることが人間界の子種から子孫繁栄を連想させ、いっぽう江戸時代には人気が乏しかった温州蜜柑は無核であることから子種無し、すなわち子孫途絶の不吉さを連想させることとの関連から、小蜜柑と温州蜜柑に対する評価の交代と生産高の傾向を説明しようと試みた。まず、研究代表者(小口)と研究分担者(中西)とにおいて江戸時代の文献および明治期の文献において上記の見解が首肯されることを確認し、問題意識を共有した。そして、江戸時代後期から明治期にかけて蜜柑が生産された実績がある地域を選定し、実地調査を行った。現地調査では幕末・明治期における蜜柑栽培・出荷関係古文書の撮影と蜜柑古木の観察、とくに接ぎ木部分の台木と穂木について注目し、写真撮影を行った。現地調査は、具体的には江戸時代から蜜柑栽培実績が認められる青江(大分県)、長島(鹿児島県)、伊木力(長崎県)、蒲刈(広島県)、三ケ日(静岡県)および各近傍を対象とし、江戸時代における蜜柑需要はおおむね有核の小蜜柑であることが確かめられた。また、多くの蜜柑古木に接ぎ木痕が認められ、蜜柑需要の変化には接ぎ木を扱う苗木商の関与に注目する必要性が明らかになった。
