Multi-ethnic Aging and Cultural Needs Within Japan's Long-Term Care Insurance System

PI has added a new dimension to healthy aging focusing on the concept of space. Within multi-ethnic aging, space plays a crucial role providing a sense of belonging. Space, within the emphasis of everyday life-culture, creates a realm of comfort, sense of security, and meaning.Another expansion of study is the usage of visual material to demonstrate temporal and spatial boundaries of space, movement, pace, barriers and their possible alternative usage. Narration-- telling stories of life stages, reflection, and structuring a linear, meaningful narrative adds an important dimension to a sense of autonomy. This analysis was developed through the process of compiling visuals and incorporating the narratives of participants.PI, in December 2022, produced a documentary titled "Day, Year, Life -- Story of Aging in Japan -- A Documentary."A day, captured over a year, documents a Japanese elderly couple and their contemplation on stages of life, encountering physical challenges of growing fragility and aging, and uncertainty of the future. Pulling the best out of their learned craft, they find comfort in the basics of everyday routine. They narrated the complexities of aging from memories of childhood, searching for life's meaning during youth, maturing into adulthood and growing into societal roles. Such crucial themes of health care, housing, social security retirement pension, social welfare entitlements, economic insecurities, care-giving, burden of disease, immobility, and disability are some of the many challenges of aging elucidated in the documentary and in the study.
