本研究の目的は、日本のローマ・カトリック教会におけるフィリピン人などの外国籍信徒が、日本の教会とどのような関係を築きつつあるかを、実地調査、インタビューをもとに検討することにあった。しかし、2020年1月以後の新型コロナウイスル感染症蔓延により、カトリック教会ではミサ、集会などがほぼすべて中止となり、実地調査、インタビューが困難となった。そのため、2020年初夏以後、調査方法を変更し、カトリック教会の出版物、ホームページ等で提供されるニューズレター、会報、報告等を収集し、その分析を中心として研究を進めてきた。とくに2011年11月に仙台教区が設置した「カトリック仙台教区滞日外国人支援センター」のニューズレター、仙台教区報などを主な資料とした。同センターは2011年3月の東日本大震災により被災した外国人を支援し、生活再建を手助けするために設置されたカトリック仙台教区の組織で、震災後、被災地各地で外国人が教会との関係を築く上で大きな役割を果たした。また、2020年春以後、ミサや集会などの信徒の集まりが中止されたため、東京教区においてはフィリピン人信徒のグループが2020年夏から、インターネット上でズームを用いてロザリオの祈りを捧げる活動を開始した。これは毎晩夜の9時から東京教区の100人以上の信徒がアクセスして行われているもので、フィリピン人の神父も参加している。規模は小さいが、同じようなインターネット上でのロザリオの祈りが仙台教区のある教会においても、外国籍信徒が中心となって行っている。こうした新たな外国籍信徒による活動も研究の対象とした。
