During the first year of this project, the project proceeded according to schedule and initial, tentative findings were reached. In-depth interviews were conducted in Japan and in the UK. Moreover, transcripts of those interviews were completed and initial analysis was begun. The research output included a conference presentation and a short magazine article on young people's participation. The interviews from the first year were intended to be the first wave of a panel study and we were to conduct the second wave of interviews at the end of last year. Unfortunately the project has been delayed by the COVID pandemic as we are not able to conduct the second wave of our panel study. In 2020, the project conducted an internet-based public opinion survey of young people's values.Research achievements are close to zero, considerably below the level intended for this project due to the delays in being able to conduct the second wave of the in-depth interviews. We will continue with the interviews as soon as it is safe to do so and hope to continue with presenting the findings at international conferences and publishing in journals.Particularly during the pandemic, assessing young people's attitudes and values toward the government and its policies is crucial, so these will be included in future research.
