イノベーションにとって部門間の知識移転は重要であるが、他部門の知識の吸収は難しいと言われる。先行研究では、他部門との紐帯を持ち、他部門の知識を探索し、それを部門内メンバーに伝達する境界連結者（BS）の存在に注目してきた。しかし、近年の研究では紐帯の有無にかかわらず、発明者の間で知識を伝達できることが示されている。このことは、他部門との紐帯がなくても、その知識を獲得することは可能であることを意味する。すると、他ユニットから知識を得るルートとして、直接ルートと間接ルートの2種類があると言える。直接ルートとは獲得者がBSを介さずに直接的に他ユニットから知識を得ることを意味し、を意味し、間接ルートとは獲得者が同一ユニット内のBSを介して間接的に他ユニットから知識を得ることを意味する。そして、本研究では、BSを含む知識提供者のネットワーク特性に着目し、そのネットワーク（中心性と構造的空隙）が直接ルートと間接ルートによる部門間知識移転にどのように影響するかを検証した。分析の結果、以下の3点が明らかになった。第一に、知識提供者の中心性は、直接ルートによる知識移転を促進する。第二に、知識提供者の中心性は、間接ルートによる知識移転を阻害する。第三に、構造的な空隙を繋ぐ知識提供者のネットワークは、間接的なルートによる知識移転を促進する。これらの結果は、知識提供者のネットワークの効果が、知識移転のタイプによって異なることを示唆している。
