项目摘要

本年度も、新型コロナウイルス感染症の流行による社会情勢の変化による影響をさまざまな面で受けることとなった。昨年度までと同様に、勤務先の教育分野における本務など、優先して対応せざるを得ない業務による負荷が大きく、研究活動全般に十分な時間を充てるのが困難な状況が続き、また、初期印刷本を多数所蔵する海外の図書館への現地調査も安心して実施できる見通しが立たないままであったため、大きな進展を得ることはできなかった。本研究の2つの柱のうちの1つである、初期印刷本の活字パターンの研究への人工知能（AI）の技術の応用に関することとしては、学生の卒業研究の指導を通じて、画像処理や機械学習のためのオープンソースのライブラリを利用した活字の分類器を試作し、初期印刷本の画像を対象として実験を行うことができ、学習のためのデータセットの重要性や入力画像の前処理に関する複数の問題を把握するに至った。また、初期印刷本の研究者から、技術的な支援についての要望を聴取したり、書誌学的な研究内容に関する意見交換を行う機会を得ることができた。もう1つの柱である、貴重書のデジタル画像の取得や品質の評価に関しては、別の学生の卒業研究の指導の過程で、改めて高品質な貴重書画像の要件を整理し、本研究の開始以来初めて、簡易な方法による資料撮影の実験を行うことができた。不測の厳しい状況が長らく続き、補助事業期間を1年延長して取り組んできた現時点においても、当初計画したような成果を具体的な形にできていないのは甚だ遺憾であるが、研究を進めるのが最も困難な時期は過ぎたという実感が得られつつあり、初期印刷本の書誌学的研究を推進するための環境整備に資するという本研究の目的を果たすべく、現実的な目標を改めて設定して活動を継続していく。
