项目摘要

昨年度に引き続き、J.R.R.トールキンの中世英語英文学研究とファンタジー創作の関連性について研究を進めた。特にトールキンが研究対象とした『ガウェイン卿と緑の騎士』(以後SGGK)の受容過程について、トマス・マロリー作『アーサー王の死』に関連する新たな受容のあり方を考察した。19世紀に日の目をみたSGGKが『アーサー王の死』を基調とする翻案作品の中に組み込まれた過程に着目することで、アーサー王年代記の流れに沿って独自の展開や改変が加えられていった。本論は "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight in Malory’s Template: “Finding Time for Romance” in Modern Arthuriana"(POETICA: An International Journal of Linguistic-Literary Studies)として出版した。本作のこうした受容の経路はこれまであまり注目されておらず、日本における翻訳や翻案での展開を考える上でも有用な知見となりうる。SGGKに関連し、緑の騎士を巡るモンスター像や風景の受容と継承についても中世主義に紐づけながら検討した。前者は「中世ブリテン建国史と巨人族討伐―『ブルート』年代記とロマンスにおける歴史的記憶―」（『「巨人」の場(トポス) ―古代オリエント・ユダヤ・イスラーム・ヨーロッパ文化圏における巨人表象の変遷』勝又悦子編（同志社大学一神教学際研究センター）、後者は「〈ガウェイン・カントリー〉の継承と発展―『忘れられた巨人』への着想源―」（『立命館文學』）として出版された。また、国立国会図書館デジタル資料調査や映画『グリーンナイト』に付随したトークイベント、研究者（トールキン研究者の伊藤尽氏や古英語研究者の福田一貴氏）との議論を通じて、日本のファンタジー文化を支える中世研究や中世主義についても理解を深めることができた。
