The State Interest and International Norm Dialectic: A Cross-National Empirical Analysis of the Advent of an Opportunistic Humanitarian Protections Regime for Refuge Seekers

Health risks made it difficult to resume travel and fieldwork under COVID-19, so I continued to collect secondary data and update the statistical data used in my dissertation chapters so they can be used for this project’s analyses, while also shifting the focus of my work at this stage of the project to reviewing in much more detail, the sociological neoinstitutionalist and relevant globalization literatures that form the theoretical foundations of this project. Establishing a solid theoretical foundation is of great import as the project aims to make a theoretical contribution to the literature.In line with this endeavor, I published a paper (March 2023) that contrasted World Society Theory and World-Systems Theory and IR constructivism to discuss their variegated yet also mutually supplementary theoretical utilities for research on cultural globalization. Another paper that reviews and analyzes the usage and content of sociological neoinstitutionalist and World Society Theory perspectives within Japanese sociology over time is currently under review. At the upcoming IMISCOE annual conference (July 3-6, 2023 in Warsaw [and online]; submission status: accepted), I will present my most recent research. In August 2022, I also took an online course on Survival (Event History) Analysis - a method I plan to use in this project’s analysis.
