本年度は、痛みに関する言語表現の理解の発達に関して、以前に収集したデータを分析した。1歳から９歳の長子を有する母親627 名を対象に、痛みの諸表現についてその頻度を5段階（1全くない2ほとんどない3たまにある4ときどきある5よくある）で評定してもらった。痛みやその部位の表現方法について、非言語表現「表情で示す（3.0~4.0）」「部位を指示・触れる（3.3~4.3）」は、年齢に関わらず「たまにある」前後から「ときどきある」前後の範囲で一定程度見られる。言語表現（「痛いと言葉で表す」「痛む部位の場所を指示する言葉を発する＜このへんが痛いなど＞」「痛む部位の名称を言葉で表す」）は１歳前半から２歳後半にかけて増加し、それ以降、非言語表現と同等かそれ以上の頻度でみられるようになる。1歳前半の子どもは「泣いたり叫んだり」の頻度が最も多いが（4.6）、1歳後半(3.5)にかけて減少し、4歳(3.8)以降、7~9歳（2.3）に至るまで徐々に減少する。このように主たる痛み表現には年齢差があるが、部位表現の正確さは年齢に関係なく高く評価される（4段階中: 3.1~3.4）。痛みの感じ方や詳細の表現については、「オノマトペを用いた表現」「痛みの程度の言語表現」「発症時期や経緯の言語表現」は徐々に増加するが、４歳以降は顕著な年齢差がない。「原因の言語表現」は徐々に増加するが2歳後半以降は顕著な年齢差がない（１歳前半~2歳後半：1.2~2.6）。「比喩表現」は全体的に頻度が低いが6歳まで徐々に増加しそれ以降は顕著な年齢差がない（１歳前半~６歳：1.2~2.0）。一般的な小児看護のテキストの記述と比較すると、やや早期に生起する項目が多いことが示唆された。
