イリオモテヤマネコは、世界で最も小さな島嶼に数万年に渡り個体群を維持してきたネコ科動物である。完全肉食獣であり頂点捕食者でもあるネコ科動物が、小島嶼において生息できていることは極めて珍しく、食肉目動物の生息を支える西表島の豊かな生物相については明らかになってきているが、それらの動物が互いにどのように結びついているのかは未だ不明な点が多い。本研究では、この生物同士の結びつきを被食・捕食関係である食物ネットワークの視点から明らかにすることを目指している。被食・捕食の事実を元に食物ネットワークを線的に構築した先行研究は多く存在するが、この関係性を島嶼生態系で量的に示した研究は極めて稀である。また、小島嶼において肉食哺乳類の生息を支えるために段階的に必要な生物体量を明らかにすることは、島嶼生態系の維持機構の解明において重要である。そこで、本研究では近年の交通量の増加により轢死している動物に注目し、交通事故死亡個体の胃内容物を用い被食・捕食関係を量的に明らかにする。研究対象として、西表島の食物ネットワークの中心にイリオモテヤマネコを位置づけ、本種の主要な餌動物の中から個体数と生物体量が比較的多い地上棲鳥類、ヘビ類、カエル類、オオコウモリを選定した。各種の胃内容物を分析し、1個体が1日に必要な最小食物量を算出する。また、各種が被食している種のエネルギー量と栄養分析を行い、各種間でのエネルギー量の流れを明らかにすることを目指している。
