Foreland basin systems are complex, large-scale features that respond to interacting complexes of variables. While models for extensional areas are well developed, this is not the case for regions where compressional activity is predominant. In particular, fades relationships within such systems (i.e. in terms of reservoir characterization) is poorly understood. Thus, studies linking tectonic and sedimentation processes within foreland systems are of profound importance. The Eocene Tremp-Pamplona Basin consists of three interlinked basins - the Tremp, Ainsa and Jaca basins - which are located within the Southern Pyrenees Foreland Basin. The Tremp Basin developed as a piggyback feature, while the Ainsa and Jaca basins evolved from a foredeep (Lower Eocene) to a piggy back (Upper Eocene) setting. These basins possibly form an interlinked depostional system with sediment being transported from E to W (Tremp to Jaca), although direct linkage and correlation between the three basins is not clear. The focus of this study will be to critically examine the major systems tracts of the region by defining a series of depositional sequences which will then be integrated into a sequence stratigraphic model, which can be related to the controlling mechanisms on basin formation, namely, regional subsidence related to flexure of the lithospheric plate on which the basin is located, and secondary controls such as local Hthology, climate and eustatic sea level.
