人口の高齢化に伴い、身体機能低下や認知機能障害を有する要介護高齢者の増加が社会的に問題となっている。特に、認知機能障害を有する高齢者にBPSD（Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia）がみられる場合や睡眠障害を有する場合は、高齢者本人のQOLの低下のみならず、介護者の負担にもつながる。しかし、在宅で生活する要介護高齢者の生活の様子や夜間の睡眠状態に関する報告は少なく、睡眠・覚醒リズムの実態は明らかになっていない。2022年度は、介護サービスを利用しながら在宅で生活する高齢者を対象に、睡眠の実態調査とアロマセラピーによる介入の効果を実証する予定であった。しかし、新型コロナウイル感染症の拡大に伴い、研究協力を得ていた介護施設においても新型コロナウイル感染症の施設内感染の発生などにより、研究協力を得ることが困難となり、調査を実施することが困難な状況であった。そこで、本年度は、国内外における在宅で認知症高齢者を介護する家族の睡眠に関する研究の動向について文献検討を行った。認知症高齢者では、中途覚醒回数の増加や概日リズムの変調など、加齢に伴う生理的変化がより顕著に現れ、夜間の睡眠障害を起こしやすい。海外論文では、認知症高齢者のBPSDやBPSDに伴う睡眠障害に付随して、介護家族の睡眠においても、寝つきの悪さ、睡眠の分断、睡眠時間の短縮、睡眠の質の低下などを指摘する論文が散見された。国内において、家族介護者の睡眠の実態を定量的に明らかにした論文は殆ど見受けられなかった。
