令和3年度は、大きく分けて二つの作業を行なった。一つ目は前年度から引き続き、山岸旧蔵資料（山岸章二(1928-1979年)および山岸享子(1940-2018年)の旧蔵資料）を中心とした調査研究の継続である。この調査で扱う一次資料には、山岸章二の音声テープや山岸自身が撮影した写真フィルムなどが含まれ、ピーター・ビアード（写真家、1938-2020年）や淀かほる（女優、1930-1993）などの文化人と対談する山岸の肉声が含まれていることが判った。これらを丹念に聞き取ることで、当時の山岸は写真を文化史の一部として広く捉え、一編集者として自身の仕事を様々に拡張していく様子を追うことができた。二つ目の作業は、山岸章二と直接交流のあった人物への取材調査である。当該年度には、NYを拠点に国際的に活躍する現代美術作家の杉本博司（1948年-）に、山岸章二との関係性についてインタビューすることができた。1977年に米国から一時帰国中だった杉本は毎日新聞社本社ビルの山岸のもとを訪ね、20x24”サイズの写真作品群をポートフォリオにまとめて山岸に見せている。杉本の話によれば、山岸の直属の部下である編集者の西井一夫（1946-2001年）が杉本を毎日芸術賞に推薦し、受賞が決まったという。山岸は杉本の活動初期から彼の写真作品を高く評価し、『カメラ毎日』では初期の杉本作品を大きく取り上げている。山岸が篠山紀信や森山大道といった日本を代表する写真家たちを発掘したことは周知の事実であるが、杉本と交流があったことはあまり知られておらず、山岸章二や西井一夫、そして彼らが編集していた「カメラ毎日」といった存在が杉本の初期の活動を支えた可能性を伺い知ることができた。今後の展望として、本研究で得られた成果をもとに山岸の活動の全体像を俯瞰する研究発表を目指す。
