インド伝統医学アーユルヴェーダの健康法である「舌清掃」は、口臭や呼吸の改善、消化機能の向上に有効であると考えられ、インドでは広く日常的に実践されている。舌清掃の口腔衛生的有効性は歯科領域研究で確認され、歯周病と全身疾患の関連も示唆されているが、舌清掃による全身的効果に対する科学的検証は、いまだ行われていない。われわれの予備調査において、舌清掃による便や身体の状態の改善を確認することができたことから、本研究課題では、口腔細菌叢の腸内細菌叢への影響に着目し、舌清掃による全身的な有用性を検討するため、①口腔細菌叢、②腸内細菌叢および便中有機酸、③口腔・全身の自他覚症状、の変化を介入研究によって検証し、舌清掃による口腔細菌叢の変化が腸内細菌叢等に与える影響を検討し、舌清掃の全身的な予防医学的有用性を評価することを目的とした。岡山大学大学院医歯薬学総合研究科予防歯科学分野（森田学教授）と共同で実施の計画及び準備を行った。初年度はまず岡山大学生命倫理審査委員会による審査を受け承認を得た後、外部の細菌叢解析機関との解析方法の確認等、具体的な実施準備を調え、予防歯科学分野にて研究参加者の募集を行った。しかしながら、研究代表者の次年度他機関異動により、やむを得ず研究を中断するに至った。なお、参加者登録が行われる前の中断決定であったため、参加者への不利益は生じていない。細菌叢と健康及び疾患との関連は近年増々示唆されている。舌清掃により口腔細菌叢及び腸内細菌叢がどのように変化するかを検証し、疾患予防に有用であるかを安全性を含めて検討することは、個人が家庭で行うことができる健康法の一つとして舌清掃の有用性をエビデンスに基づいて示す可能性に繋がり、予防医学上重要な課題であると考えられる。環境が整い次第、研究再開を目指す。
