この研究は、日本の病院で入院している治療困難な「むずかしい患者」について、その実態と患者をとりまく状況、看護師の心理的ストレスに関する状況を明らかにし、「むずかしい患者」をケアする看護師への支援について新たなアプローチを明らかにすることを目的としている。2022年度は、前年度に引き続き、「共感疲労」「共感ストレス」に関連している概念を整理し、それぞれどのように研究が進められているか、これらの概念と「むずかしい患者」との関係性を明確にするための文献レビューを行った。「むずかしい患者」に関しては、日本語文献が少ない事から、海外文献も参考に進めている。また、Covid-19感染拡大により一時進行を中断することとなったインタビュー調査を再開し、「むずかしい患者」のケアを経験した看護師に6名にインタビューを実施した。「むずかしい患者」のケアについて１０年以上前の経験を鮮明な記憶で語る対象者もおり、その心理的疲弊状態の深刻さがみられた。研究の動向は、日本看護科学学会、日本保健医療社会学会等の学会に参加し、広く看護師の「共感疲労」等の情報収集と現況の理解に努めた。また、「感情労働」の第一人者である専門家に相談する機会を設け、概念を整理、「むずかしい患者」の動向、看護師の「共感疲労」に関して理解する上での助言を得た。
