We analized factors of geographic size variations and molecular evolution of Japanese moles, genus Mogera, Consisting of 260 specimens from 27 localities in Honshu and Shikoku in M.minor, 280 specimens from 23 localities in Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu in M.wogura, and 41 specimens from Honshu and Sado Island in M.tokudae. As the habitat factors for the size variations, the size of habitat area (indicated by the area of paddy field), soil hardness, five meteorological data taken by nearby meteorological stations were employed for regression analysis. Geographic size variations of moles showed positive correlation with the size of habitat area, but the relation with temperature and precipitation was different according to the species of moles : The size of M.wogura varied negatively with mean minimum temperature and that of M.minor had a positive correlation with yearly mean temperature. Soil hardness (soft soil depth) did not have any significant correlation with the size of mole.The nucleotide sequences of the cytochrome c oxidase subnit I gene and isozyme anaysis of 20 loci well agreed the mole taxonomy presented by Abe (1967) and showed that there are some intraspecific variations in local populations of the moles.
