Pollen of 110 species representing 64 genera from 17 of the 18 tribes in the Acalyphoideae (sensu Webster, 1989) was examined in SEM and TEM.This subfamily is palynologically diverse. The Cheiloseae (Cheilosa) have spinulate tricolporate pollen. In the Chrozophoreae, Ditaxis has unique bilateral pollen with two zonapertures. In the Pycnocomeae, Pycnocomas has a complete tectum with spinules in a reticulate pattern and Argomuellera is finely or reticulate or microreticulate. The Adelieae and the Alchornieae share operculate tricolporate pollen. The Acalypheae have heterogenous pollen grains with various exine sculptures and structures. The Dalechampieae are characterized by reticulate exines. The Pereae have unusual exine structure composed of interwoven columellae. Most Acalyphoideae have colporate apertures, but the number of apertures varies. The wide range of pollen diversity suggests that the subfamily Acalypohoideae is a polyphyletic taxon including several heterogeneous groups.
