本年度は、着物の伝統的な文様の一つであった風景柄に着目し、西洋文化の影響が一般の人々にも拡がった大正・昭和初期に、新たに作られるようになった新奇な洋風の「山岳風景」が描かれた着物に焦点を当て、それらの技法的特徴と文化的背景を明らかにし、国際シンポジウム等で発表を行った。通常この様な新奇な柄は羽裏や襦袢などの人の目につかない場所か簡単な外出着に用いられることが多いが、「山岳風景」を描いたものには礼服が存在することが特徴である。本研究では、近代以前から「吉祥文様」として着物に多く描かれてきた富士山の表象と比較することによって、新しく着物の中に出現した「山岳風景」は信仰の対象ではなく、行楽地として発見された山岳として図案化されていることを明らかにした。実際、大正期に人々の旅行観は劇的に変化し、行楽の対象として日本アルプスが発見されたことにより、人々はアルプスの形にも美しさを見いだしていた。それにともなって、下から山を見上げるのではなく、山の上から尾根を眺める構図が描かれるようになった。日本アルプスの名前から明らかなように、当時の人々は日本アルプスの山の美しさを楽しみつつも、ヨーロッパのアルプスを念頭に置いていた。よってこれらの着物に描かれた山岳も、ヨーロッパアルプスと日本アルプスが二重写しになっている。これは、琵琶湖の風景を中国の瀟湘八景に見立てた近江八景と同様の、ある種の「見立て」の構造であるといる。本研究は、山岳柄着物が西洋の自然的山岳の景観と文化的アクティヴィティへの憧れを個性的な形で示すメディアであったことを示し、山岳風景柄着物の受容は、西洋文化を先取りしようとする着用者の個性にのみ帰結するのではなく、伝統柄のバリエーションの一つに位置付けられる可能性を示唆したことに意義がある。
