筆者は2021年6月から2022年2月にかけて、梅州市における仏教集団・香花仏教を対象とし、現地調査を実施し、香花仏教の歴史と現状を初歩的に把握した。2022年8月に研究員制度の再開にあたり、11月まで日本で政教関係や社会主義理論に関する文献の収集・整理を行った。11月以降、筆者は調査地の梅州市に戻り、現地にてフィールドワークと文献調査を再開した。研究概要は以下の通りである。中国におけるコロナ政策の影響で、2022年12月以前、梅州市のほとんどの宗教施設は活動を自粛せざるを得なくなった。その影響で、当初調査対象を拡大する予定であったが、調査を実施できなくなった。以上の状況に鑑みて、筆者は梅州市都市部を拠点として、以下の調査を行った。①：これまで研究を行ってきて顔なじみになっていた香花廟に通って、2020年以降コロナ禍における廟の活動、廟に対する施策、およびそれに対する自らの生存戦略を通時的に観察・把握してきた。②：「東アジア文化都市」と「国家級生態文化保護区」に登録することを目指した梅州市政府は、梅州地方の文化財を積極的に宣伝し、それを「梅州独自の客家文化」として社会に向けてアピールした。既に文化財と認識されている香花仏教の儀礼と音楽も宣伝対象となっていた。筆者は香花に関わる文化財の登録と宣伝に関与した文化財の専門家、学者、地方知識人と香花職能者にインタビューし、客家伝統文化としての「香花文化」表象が作られる過程を追究した。③：12月以降、中国におけるコロナ政策が緩和に向かった。感染拡大による不安の中で、宗教職能者たちは様々な呪術的手段を用いて感染を防止しようとしたことが明らかになった。
