におい刺激に対する快・不快感が動体視力にどのような影響を及ぼすかを明らかにすることが本研究の目的である.同一のにおい物質を嗅いだときの快・不快感は,人によって異なることが知られている.一方,動体視力は,スポーツ分野において重要視されており,日常生活においても危険を回避するために必要である.実験方法:におい物質に対する評価は,6段階臭気強度尺度と9段階快・不快尺度を採用した.におい物質は,快の評価を予想して果皮,葉,花,樹脂の植物精油から10種類選択した.不快の評価を予想して特定悪臭物質から5種類を選択した.動体視力の評価は,横方向の動きを識別するDVA(Dynamic Visual Acuity)を用いた.石垣らが監修した動体視力トレーニングゲームの得点を動体視力の成績とした.実験結果:におい刺激は,臭気強度が3になるように10名の被験者に評価させ,におい物質濃度を調節した.臭気強度3のときの溶液濃度は,果皮の精油レモンは2.0%,葉の精油ユーカリは0.5%,樹脂の精油フランキンセンスは0.5%,花の精油ローズは0.1%と精油の種類によって異なることが明らかになった.被験者6名の結果から,動体視力の成績と快・不快感の関係において,不快側に申告した場合に,動体視力の成績は高い傾向がみられた.本研究は,特定のにおい物質が期待した効果を発揮するという考え方ではなく,一個人にとって快または不快なにおいが動体視力にどのような影響を及ぼすかを明らかにするために行っているため,今後は,快・不快感のばらつきが大きかった植物精油のラベンダー,フランキンセンス,ゼラニウム,ローズについて各被験者の結果を精査していく必要があると考える.
