本研究の目的は、平成26～28年までの3年間計画において、ヴィクトリア時代のイギリスにおいて絶大な人気を博しながら長らく等閑視されてきた小説家ウィーダ(Ouida, Marie Louise de la Ramee)について、ヴィクトリア時代のセンセーション・ノヴェルあるいはフィクション (sensation novel or sensation fiction)の系譜からその代表作品を読み解き、時代を先取りした先進的フェミニストとして、ウィーダの再評価をはかることである。以下は、初年度である平成26年度の研究実績の概要である。１）1906年のエリザベス・リーによる信頼できる伝記Ouida: A Memoirと、これを補完する1950年のアイリーン・ビッグランドによる著作Ouida: The Passionate Victorianを基盤として、自らを「文化的アウトサイダー」と見なすウィーダの自己形成を解明した。２）ヴィクトリア時代の文学関連書籍の通読を通して、子どもは「無垢な存在」として表象され、その死がイギリス文学のありふれたテーマであった時代から、子どものイメージは変遷を遂げ、19世紀終わり頃には、大人さながら「自立した個」として認められるようになった時代背景を検証した。３）「敗者の物語」として海外で受容される『フランダースの犬』を明治期に日本に紹介したキリスト教徒の影響を検証しつつ、特に児童文学において、動物を通して子どもの情操を涵養する傾向と、日本における「忠犬」の系譜と忠君愛国のナショナリズムとの関係性にも目配せしつつ、日本における『フランダースの犬』の特異な受容の形態を分析した。
