项目摘要

本研究では、資料整理の不充分な明治一〇年代の国字改良論についての言語学的な分析を行うこととしている。そのため、初年度は、国字改良論についての資料収集を行うこととし、また若干の資料調査を行った。資料整理については、これまでは、かなのくわい機関誌の収集などを行ってきたが、本年度は、それにくわえて、羅馬字会にかんする資料、そして関連する印刷技術や昭和期の国語改革まで見据えた資料収集を行った。資料の整理をつうじて、国字改良論における課題の変遷を数量的に明確にするため、今後は資料収集にくわえ、記事目録の作成などを行っていきたい。このほか、あたらしく国立国会図書館から近代資料を中心としたOCRデータから生成されたn-gramデータベースが提供されたので、国字改良論にどれほど活用できるか検討を行うため、てはじめに送り仮名の変容についての調査を行った。OCRデータにもとづくn-gramデータベースというものの性質上、過剰検出や過小検出の問題は避けて通れないが、それでも注意をもって使用すれば歴史研究に堪えることを示し得た。また、大日本印刷の運営する本と活字館において、大日本印刷の使用した活字の調査を行い、どれほどの変体仮名活字が残存するかを中心に検討を行った。前稿において指摘した、濁点仮名活字整備の不均衡がここでも確認できたという点をここで特筆しておきたい。これは、かならずしも明示的に語られない国字改良論者たちの認識基盤をあきらかにするという意味で重要な取組みである。
