项目摘要

本研究は戦間期の日英の自転車産業を対象に国際的な比較を通じて、互換性を持った製品設計への規格統一（モジュール化）へと至るプロセスおよびメカニズム、そして、その後の国際市場の状況を明らかにすることである。具体的には、（１）戦前におけるモジュール化という経営活動から、日本の経営史の一端を描き出す。（２）モジュール化がいかにして起こるのか、そのプロセスと影響を明らかにする。（３）モジュール化の動きが国際市場展開にどのように結びつくのか明らかにする。COVID-19が落ち着きを見せ、英国における調査の機会に恵まれたため、2022年度においては主に国内および外国文献と英国におけるアーカイブ資料の収集を主に実施していった。収集成果として、自転車および部品に関する生産、輸出入、産業従事者、事業規模、各国市場の推移や状況、英国メーカーにおける経営状況等、生産状況と市場についてのデータを収集していった。英国のデータと研究を見ていくと、1930年代英国は国内、海外ともに売上を伸ばし、大きな危機は訪れなかった。一方で、英国の自転車部品メーカーは、日本製部品の輸出が伸び、脅威を感じていたようである。英国は戦間期においても世界市場で優位にあり続け、当時、日本は産業発展の途上であった。先行研究において、日本の強みを関東大震災をきっかけとした設備更新と低賃金、業界の努力に触れている。ただしその分析は研究の限界で指摘されているように、英国で収集した統計データに頼った見方であり、比較研究としては十分ではない。本研究では特に日本における産業の構造が互換性を持った製品設計に影響を与え、その後の国際市場展開に結びついていると考えているため、日英における資料の比較整理および考察が今後の課題として求められる。研究成果として、歴史的な影響の把握の必要性から日本の業界の現況について考察し、共著として出版している。
