本研究の目的は、対象期間を戦後復興期から1970年代と設定し、百貨店が利用した返品制について、百貨店が利用を拡大した過程・理由、利用状況、納入業者との間で形成された互恵的な相互依存関係の状況および百貨店経営に与えた正負の影響を歴史的に分析することである。この分析には、学術的な独創性として、第一に衣料品分野に加え、他の商品・サービス提供分野における返品制の実態を分析対象に加えること、第二に仕入形態の分類や経済的特徴を明確化するために契約法学での研究成果を取り入れること、第三に優越的地位の濫用規制に関する経済法学の成果を取り入れ、同規制が返品制に与えた影響を明らかにすることを取り入れ、研究を進めることとしている。令和4年度は対象期間を戦後復興期に設定し、百貨店における返品制の実態を明らかにするため、当該期間における百貨店の内部要因や納入業者・消費者の変化，優越的地位の濫用規制の推移といった外部要因の変化、これらの要因の変化を受けた百貨店による経営戦略の変化と品揃え・サービスの変化、商品分野ごとの返品制の利用状況、納入業者との関係などを記述した文献、史料等を入手し、これらを分析した。分析結果に基づき実施した学会発表の主な内容として、当該期間における仕入形態の実態が現在の実態と変わらないものであり、特に委託仕入において売上・仕入の総額計上がこの期間には既に行われていたこと、既存研究では着目してこなかった、返品制において商品管理上のリスクを納入業者に負担させていたことなどを明らかにした。また、1954年に制定された百貨店特殊指定では買取仕入から委託仕入への切替を制限しており、かつ、仕入資金負担の観点から、既存研究で主張されている買取仕入から委託仕入への転換が百貨店・納入業者の取引におけるルール安定につながったという見解については、短期的には疑問があることを明らかにした。
