本研究の目的は、地域をマネジメントするために設置された地域統括会社が多国籍企業に寄与するかどうか、その有効性が何によって影響されるのかを明らかにすることである。この目的の下に、研究初年度である本年度は、主として3つを進めることができた。まず一つ目として、リージョナルマネジメント及び地域統括会社の役割等の研究を中心に文献サーベイを行い、本研究の目的に関連するこれまでの議論を体系的に整理した。そこでは、地域戦略の提起によって、多国籍企業の本社と子会社の間にある中間的な組織として地域統括会社の役割が強調される一方で、地域統括会社が多国籍企業の業績に与える影響や、地域統括会社の設置効果の影響要因について必ずしも十分に検討されてこなかったことが改めて確認された。その上で、先行研究に基づいて作業仮説を導出した。二つ目は、日本多国籍企業の本社、地域統括会社と子会社パフォーマンスに関するデータの収集と分析用データセットの構築である。東洋経済新報社の『海外進出企業総覧』とビューロー・ヴァン・ダイク社のグローバル企業データベース『Orbis』を用いて、地域統括会社を所有する日系多国籍企業を特定し、本社と地域統括会社に関するデータの抽出、および地域統括会社を持つ日系多国籍企業の子会社の経済的パフォーマンスに関するデータを抽出し、上記のデータを整合して分析可能なパネルデータセットを構築した。三つ目は、まだ分析としては予備的な段階にとどまっているが、構築したデータセットを使用し、地域統括会社の設置と子会社経済的パフォーマンスの関係性について、定量的検証を試みた。
