人口減少下にあるわが国の地方社会を対象に、非都市域における都市的地域（1,000人/km2かつ、2,000人/km2以上の人口メッシュと連続性をもたないメッシュに含まれる都市的地域）が有する空間の歴史的ありようと現在的価値を考察し、地方社会におけるネットワークの拠点となりうる空間を抽出するとともに、上記を核とするネットワーク構造を再構築することで、コンパクトシティ・プラス・ネットワークモデルを継承的に発展させる。これまでに、目標とする50のまちのフィールド調査のうち28のまちでの調査を行った。フィールド調査を通じて、今後研究を進めて行くべき方針と論点をいくつか発見することができた。とくに人口集中区域の人口が約1300人/km2と低密度である福島県安達郡大玉村玉井地区を対象に、その地域の中心部に存在する大規模な集合型耕作地（個別の住民が小規模な土地単位を畑地や牧草地、花畑として耕作）の歴史的経緯および土地利用と社会組織の変遷を、史料調査と聞き取り調査、実測調査を通じて明らかにするとともに、兼業としての畑地での作物づくりと外部への販売を通じて形成された社会的ネットワークと地域への愛着を定量化することで、自立共生的な場所としてのまちなかの耕作地の価値を検証している。
