先進国では全労働者の約15%が夜間勤務を行っている。不規則な勤務を行う必要があるため、夜間勤務は循環器疾患や2型糖尿病発症などと関連していることが報告されている。しかし夜間勤務が口腔疾患に与える影響を検討した論文は少なく、エビデンスの蓄積が必要である。本研究の目的は、夜間勤務とう蝕および歯周状態の関連を明らかにすることである。インターネット調査会社を利用して質問調査を行い、3,132名から口腔の健康状態、夜間労働の有無を含めた労働環境要因、社会経済的状態などを得た。また、想定している中間要因である血糖値、口腔保健行動、ソーシャル・サポートの有無も収集した。そのうち、879名から口腔内写真と対象年度の健康診断の結果を得た。現在はデータクリーニング中である。更に別集団の238名に、自己報告の口腔の健康状態(現在歯数、DMF歯数など)を含んだ質問紙調査と歯科検診を行った。質問紙調査と歯科検診の結果はすでにデータ化を行った。こちらもデータクリーニング中である。
