本年度は、日系アメリカ人二世デザイナーのイサム・ノグチとジョージ・ナカシマのキャリアとアイデンティティ形成の面で大きな影響を与えた日本での活動についての調査を中心に行なった。最初に、国立国会図書館において下調べを行い、それに基づいて地方の図書館と文書館で資料収集を行なった。香川県立図書館では、この二人の日本での芸術家や職人とのコラボレーションの実現に重要な役割を果たした香川県知事金子正則に関わる資料を収集した。徳島県立文書館では、イサム・ノグチがパリのUNESCO本部の日本庭園の作庭に使用した阿波の青石と作庭を手伝った庭師に関する資料を収集した。後者の調査の中で、阿波の青石をノグチに紹介した20世紀を代表する作庭家の一人である重森三玲の直筆の手紙等貴重な資料を閲覧することができ、ノグチの日本庭園が重森の日本庭園とどのように繋がるのか、また繋がらないのかを検討する上で有意義であった。読み慣れない古い字体の資料の読解に苦労していたところ、スタッフの方々や古文書を読みに来ていた地元の方々にとても親切に教えていただき、文書館とそれを支えるコミュニティの重要性を実感した。これまではアメリカの資料を中心に調査してきたが、日本の資料を加えることで、研究対象をより多元的に捉え、分析することが可能になった。今後さらにアメリカでの調査を進め、トランスナショナルに活動を行なった日系アメリカ人二世デザイナーの足跡を辿る上でも、本年度の調査が重要な参照点となる。
