本課題は、近代日本における性別観の形成過程を明らかにすることを目的としている。2022年度においては、特に歌舞伎の女形をめぐる議論を精査することにより、「心の性」という観念が形成されていった様相を浮かび上がらせた。20世紀初頭の日本では、舞台において「女の役は誰が演じるべきなのか」という問いが演劇関係者を中心に真剣に議論された。1629年に江戸幕府によって女性が公の舞台で演じることが禁止されて以来、女性の役は身体的には男性である女形によって演じられ、そのことに疑義が差し挟まれることはなかった。しかし、明治に入り、西洋では女性の役は女性が演じているという知見がもたらされることにより、改めて「女の役は誰が演じるべきなのか」が問われることになった。その結果、現代劇では女優が、「伝統芸能」である歌舞伎では女形が女性の役を演じるという住みわけが形成されていった。本研究では、そのような住みわけが、いかなるセックス／ジェンダー観に基づいて形成されていったのかを明らかにした。先行研究では、女優と女形の住みわけは、女優を「自然」、女形を「不自然」とする認識に基づいていたことが指摘されてきた。そうした認識の背後には、女性性を女性の身体に「自然」に備わるものとする科学的な言説が存在したことが指摘されてきた。これに対して、本研究では「女の役は誰が演じるべきか」という議論において、心、あるいは、心という観念に重なる感情や精神、心理に、あたかもその人の性別の本質が存在しているかのようなイメージの形成がなされていったことを指摘した。女性身体には女性の〈心〉が、男性身体には男性の〈心〉が備わっており、その〈心〉の表現として「見た目」や「女性性」が捉えられていくことにより、女性の役は、女性の〈心〉をもつ、女性身体しか演じられないという論理がつくられていったのである。
