本研究の目的は，書体研究の基盤整備へ向けて書体の視覚的な特徴を系統的に記述する方法を構築することである。これによって、これまで経験的なものであった書体の形状に関する知見が明示的に共有可能となる。本研究の目的を達成するために，「書体記述の解像度の階層と各階層における変数の特定」と「書体記述の解像度の各階層における各変数の有意味な範囲の特定」の二段階に分けて研究を進める。第一段階では，欧文と和文書体の分類と記述に関する文献を対象に系統的文献レビューを行う。第二段階では，書体作成の実践の場における参与観察と専門家へのインタビューを行う。本年度は，主に第二段階の予備調査として，書体制作塾「文字塾」に参加し，参与観察を行った。文字塾は1年間かけて仮名書体を制作する塾である。申請者は文字塾に塾生として参加し，自身の書体制作の過程を記録するとともに，他の塾生の書体制作の過程を観察した。次年度は，この記録をもとに書体制作の参与観察の本調査を行う予定である。これに加えて，本年度は第一段階の欧文と和文書体の分類と記述に関する系統的文献レビューを行うための文献収集を行った。
