本研究は、子どものグローバル意識の形成をめざす小学校総合学習カリキュラムの開発を目的とする、平成10・11年度の2年度にわたる研究である。本研究ではとくに、「食」にかかわるカリキュラムの開発を試みた。なぜなら、「食」は人間の生活におけるもっとも切実で基本的な問題のひとつだからであり、また、例えば我が国の食糧自給率が示しているように、「食」はグローバルな視野でものごとを把握することを私たちに要求するからである。子どもがより多くの人々との関係性を認識(もしくは再認識)することのなかに、グローバル意識が形成されていくと考えられる。したがって、グローバル意識の形成をめざす総合学習は、従来とはまったく別の題材をあらたに開発するのではなく、従来から取りあつかってきた題材を、人と人との関係性からとらえ直すことからはじまる。
