本年度も昨年度にひきつづき、イタリア共和国とギリシャ共和国において現地調査を実施した(調査期間平成11年7月19日〜8月13日)。イタリアでは、サレント地方のギリシャ系住民が住む地区を中心にして、坐がつくる場の問題に焦点をあて調査をおこなった。ギリシャでは、これまで調査研究をおこなってきた北ギリシアの山村の居住形態と比較検討するために、伝統的な建築や生活習慣が残るカルパトス島で調査を実施した。昨年度は、主として私的空間における坐の姿勢とコミュニケーションのありようについて調査をすすめたが、本年度はそれをふまえて公共空間における身体共鳴、身体の共振に着目して、身体の共存在性について研究をおこなった。上記の現地調査と平行し、視覚的資料と文字資料から、研究課題に関するデータを狩猟した。そのなかから、戦時下のサラエヴォで上演されたサミュエル・ベケットの演劇に注目し、ベケット劇における坐の姿勢をサラエヴォないしバルカン半島というコンテクストにおきかえて論じた論文を発表した。また、ギリシアの教会につどう会衆間の身体的コミュニケーションがイコンをとおしていかにおこなわれているかに着目した論文を発表した。さらに、第15回日本中世英語英文学会全国大会で、特権としての坐の発生を中世文学と美術にたどった口頭発表をおこなった("The Segys of the Rounde Table"―特権としての座の発生)。これらの論文と、現地調査でえたデータにもとづき、東地中海地域における「坐」の位相を触角的空間という視点から、目下、研究論文を執筆している。
