今年度は前半は初年度の研究成果を継続し、後半は総括を行った。まず、北海道大学付属北方資料室にあるパターンブックスを調査した結果、北海道にある明治期の西洋建築の多くがパターンブックスのデザインと類似していることが判明した。たとえば、有名な時計台はアンドルー・ジャクソン・ダウニングが著した本のなかにあるデザインと酷似している。以上の成果をふまえ、パターンブックスと実際の建築の比較調査を行い、北海道における西洋建築の文化史的な意義を考察した。特に、開拓期の西洋建築の意義を、パターンブックスの著者のメッセージを念頭に考察した。開拓期の西洋建築の文化的意義は大きく分けて三つあったと思われる。ひとつはデザインを担当したお雇い米人教師にとっての意味、次は開拓使の指導者たちにとっての意味、最後は一般市民にとっての意味である。これら三つの意味が相互に影響し合いながら、西洋建築の文化的意義が形成されたと考えられる。同時に、パターンブックスと西洋建築の比較をもとに、今日の札幌における西洋建築の歴史的意義を模索した。とりわけ、昔は流行の「最先端」とみなされた西洋建築が、現在は「レトロ」な存在になっていった過程とその意義を考察した。以上の研究成果は本研究担当者の博士論文 The Ainu in U.S.-Japan Relations(Ph.D.Dissertation,College of William and Mary,1999)にまとめら、結実した。
