本研究は小川尚義を編集長とする台湾総督府学務課編纂チームが30年を隔てて編集した《日台大辞典》と《新訂日台大辞典》に挙げられている常用語彙を取り上げ、それぞれの対訳台湾語の語彙を整理し、分析したものである。同一の日本語見出し語で二冊の辞書の台湾語訳語にどのような変化があったのか、意識的に改訂した意図は何であろうかを探ってみた。結果として、領台初期に比べて、末期の台湾総督府が台湾語に対する知識は各方面において現れた。新訂版の日台大辞典に収録語彙の大幅増のみならず、語義の改訂、語源の判明、言葉の使用頻度、発音の審訂、方言訛りの区別など、いずれも著しい進歩を見せた。この結果を見れば、当時台湾総督府は長年の言語調査と研究によって台湾語を完全に把握していたと言えよう。本研究の成果は1998年5月に台湾で開催された「台湾語言及其教学国際研討会」にて口頭発表され、1999年10月に本学の文学部紀要に掲載された。なお、この論文の全文もインターネットを通じて公開している。
