本研究は, アジアゾウの性成熟前の成長期における消化機能を明らかにすることで, 栄養管理を適正に行い, 将来繁殖可能な個体を育成することを目的として実施した。まず, アジアゾウの消化機能を測定するための消化試験系の確立を試みた。アジアゾウは, 単独飼育よりも群飼育が望ましいが, 群飼育では個体毎の糞量と摂餌量の把握が困難であるため消化率の測定が難しい。そこで, 家畜で用いられる指示物質法(アルカン法)の適用可能性を検証した。排糞量を推定するための外部マーカーとしてはC32アルカンを, 消化率を推定するための内部マーカーとしてはC31アルカンを用いた。条件検討には, 摂餌量と排糞量が正確に測定できる単独飼育中のメス(推定43歳)を用い, 2回の試験を実施した。この結果, 外部マーカー(C32)は回収率が安定せず, マーカーとしての有用性を確立するには至らなかった。一方, 内部マーカー(C31)は, 回収率が安定しており, 消化率を推定する上で有効であることが示唆された。これらの結果から, 排糞量が明確ではない場合でも, 摂餌量が測定できれば, C31アルカンを使用した消化率の推定が可能であることが示唆された。上記の理由から, 群飼中である成長期の4個体については, 消化率の推定ができなかった。代替案として, 糞中の揮発性脂肪酸(VFA)を測定することで, 消化能力の推定を行った。VFAは消化管内において飼料を消化する際に微生物が産生する物質であり, VFA濃度から消化管内の微生物活性および消化能力を推定できると考えられる。測定の結果, 成長期の4個体では, 飼育中の成獣メス個体および過去の海外での報告例と比較して糞中VFA濃度が低い値となった。これは, 成獣と比較して現在飼育中の成長期個体は消化能力が低い可能性を示唆している。本研究を通じて, 成長期個体の消化能力が成獣個体と異なる可能性が示唆されたため, 今後の研究を通じてより正確な消化機能の解明を試みたい。

The purpose of this study is to improve the digestive function before sexual maturity, to improve the management of nutrition, and to improve the breeding ability of individuals in the future. This study is aimed at clarifying the possibility of individual differences in digestive ability during growth, and future research is aimed at clarifying the correct understanding of digestive function.
