昭和十年は、日露戦争三十周年に当たる。この年日本は国を挙げて過去の顕彰に熱狂していた。数多の戦記本や写真帖の出版、各地での忠魂碑建立、軍神神社の創建、造幣局による記念牌鋳造、さらには祝祭仮装行列まで行われた。考えて見れば、三十周年自体に意味はないのであり、二十周年も二十五周年もなかったところへ、この時期―満州事変以降―に三十年を迎えたことを奇貨として、附会されたものなのである。そこには大きく二点に関し、重要な意味付けがあった。第一は、国民精神の高揚である。文楽を例にとると、日露戦争時の景事において露艦爆沈を火花仕掛けで見せ、大正十三年録音忠臣蔵茶屋場の謎掛けに日本勝ったと吹き込んだりしたのは、当座の耳目を喜ばせる程度にとどまるものであった。一方、日露戦捷三十周年を当て込んだ新作は、非日常的な劇場での感動が日常における精神の高揚と一体化するのである。第二は、文化の対外宣揚である。日露戦争は近代国家日本の大陸進出を後押しする対外戦争であった。その三十周年前年に発足した財団法人国際文化振興会は、明治以降の外国文化吸収から日本文化発信への方向転換を宣言した。宝塚少女歌劇において海外進出を目的とした作品が社長小林一三の自作として発表され、そこには、レビュー史上初めて浄瑠璃義太夫節と歌舞伎とが採用されたことも、その一端である。これらの諸事象を連関的かつ総合的に捉えるため、日露戦争三十周年当時の実態を、新聞各紙および芸能諸誌から忠実に再現し、それらの記事を分析した。その結果、事実の背景に存在した国家当局の意図や思想運動一現下日本の状況を日露戦争三十周年と結びつけること、日露戦争の勝利が日本の伝統によってもたらされたとするもの、日露戦争の勝利に貢献した人々とその背景にある犠牲的精神を想起させること―が浮き彫りとなり、映画演劇等の芸能が、古典演劇も含めて巻き込まれていた状況が明らかとなった。平成十六年は日露戦争百年に当たり様々な取り組みが行われた。ところが、十年後平成二十六年にも、主としてアジアの戦勝国日本という方向から、百十周年が記念された。本研究は八十年前の一事象を考察するにとどまらず、現在・近未来日本の方向性に関しても、有用な示唆を与えるものとなる。
